Why “1 year = 7 human years” isn’t actually true.

For decades, people popularized the idea of multiplying a dog’s or cat’s age by 7 to find its human age, but that formula never had real scientific backing. Animals age much faster in their early years and then level off, and large dogs age faster than small ones past a certain point. Current formulas are based on studies comparing real biological markers across species, giving a far more accurate result.

What result do you get?

  • Human-year equivalent age: calculated with a realistic aging curve, not a simple multiplication.
  • Size adjustment (dogs): large breeds age differently than small ones, and the result reflects that.
  • Approximate life stage: whether your pet is in its puppy/kitten, adult or senior stage based on the result.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Do I need to create an account?

No, never. You can use the calculator directly, with no sign-up or passwords.

Why isn’t the result just age x7?

Because that formula is an oversimplified myth that doesn’t reflect how dogs and cats actually age. We use a curve based on more recent studies.

Why does it ask for breed size if I have a dog?

Because large-breed dogs age faster than small ones past a certain age, so size affects the result.

Does this result have medical value?

No. It’s an approximate equivalence to help you better understand your pet’s life stage, not a diagnosis. For any health concern, consult your veterinarian.
